Laura Reich
Where do you work?
Harper Meyer LLP
What type of legal work do you do?
International and Commercial Dispute Resolution (litigation and arbitration) with a focus on business matters and art law.
What was your most rewarding professional achievement?
There have been many wonderful moments in almost 20 years of practice, and it's hard to pick one as the "most rewarding." Every victory in trial or arbitration is pretty darn rewarding! Starting my own firm with a friend since high school was pretty great (wish some of our teachers could see us now, ha!). And every referral from a satisfied client, fellow lawyer, or even opposing counsel feels like a confirmation that we are doing something right. One of my most rewarding moments recently was when my father (a 50+ year attorney) referred one of his long-standing clients to me because he knew I would take care of them. Finally, the work my partners and I have done for the families of WWII victims whose property (particularly art) was stolen from them by the Nazis has been fantastically rewarding.
What advice do you have for women in the legal profession?
Embrace challenges and be open to taking calculated risks. This might mean pursuing a leadership role, taking on a high-profile case, or venturing into an unfamiliar area of law. Often, growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Cultivate a diverse support network that includes mentors, peers, friends, and contacts in other professions. This network can provide support and guidance, and help you take calculated risks with greater confidence in yourself and your abilities.
What does your pro bono practice look like?
Since law school, I have been involved with Florida's Children First, a non-profit, nonpartisan advocacy organization committed to protecting and advancing the rights of children and youth impacted by the child welfare, juvenile justice, and disability systems. I currently serve as Vice President of the Board of Directors and have been proud to support systemic, thoughtful reform efforts, as well as promote high-quality legal representation of children. I am a firm believer in making sure that the youth voice is heard in decision-making on child welfare issues. FCF can always use new supporters and friends!
