On Friday, September 13, 2019, MDFAWL in partnership with the Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) program hosted the FAWL in Love with GAL College Tour at the GAL training center in downtown Miami. The program was well attended by local attorneys as well as law students from St. Thomas University, the University of Miami, and Florida International University. The full day training offered attendees an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the GAL program for purposes of volunteering as a mentor or Guardian Ad Litem. The curriculum included an introduction to dependency court, an explanation of some of the ethics issues associated with representing a child’s best interest, a presentation on bias and efforts to eliminate it, a lunchtime question and answer session with the Honorable Vivian Del Rio and General Magistrate Steven Lieberman, and an explanation of some of the issues facing youth in foster care as well as suggestions for working with and mentoring them.
